Short article today and of all things, it’s going to be on belts.

Why belts? Because I feel like, of all things, belts aren’t really talked about by styled influencers and there’s quite a bit to know about them that I had to find out from personal experience.

Belts typically come in 3 different widths (from least wide to most wide):

1.25″

35mm (typically European brands)

1.5″

The wider a belt is the more casual it is. So for example, you’re not going to want to wear a 1.5″ belt with suit pants or dress shoes.

I would recommend getting a belt that is either 1.25″ wide or 35mm for your first nicer belt because it will work with more casual outfits AND with more formal outfits.

In terms of matching you DO NOT have to be 100% spot on with the shade or your belt and shoes unless the occasion is genuinely formal (an occasion where you’d have to have to wear a suit or tuxedo for example.) For formal occasions, I recommend buying belts from the same retailer you bought your shoes from so they are as closely matched as possible.

In any other circumstance if your belt is a shade lighter or darker than your shoes IT DOESN’T MATTER as long as they are 90% similar.

Another thing is, you don’t have to, and probably don’t want to, match your belt with sneakers. The only exception is if you’re wearing leather sneakers that are the usual dress shoe colors (brown, black, walnut etc.) If you have red Air Force 1s for example you don’t want to wear a red belt. It just looks tacky.

Woven belts and cloth belts are fun but I’d just recommend going for a basic no-frills belt. Belts like those aren’t very versatile and only really shine in summer (and shorts.)

When you start buying belts from nicer retailers you will notice sizing goes in inches or cm as opposed to the usual small, medium and large, etc.

To figure out your belt size take your best-fitting belt and measure from the end of the buckle to the hole you use. That’s your belt size. Typically belts are sold in even numbers so if you’re between sizes go to the next size. Some people say you can take your pants size and add 2 but because of things like vanity sizing with pants I find this to be very hit or miss.

You NEVER want to cheap out on leather. It’s one of the few things that (to an extent) scales in aesthetic quality AND durability with prices. I recommend the following brands for belts: Thirteen50, Orion, and Meermin. Costco’s Kirkland brand is also made of real leather and not “genuine leather” if you’re hurting financially. I am personally a fan of Thirteen50.

I try to make articles on things I wish I had articles about when I started my style journey and hopefully this article brought you value.

This will be less of an article filled with actionable advice and more of my thoughts and musings. If you have more than a passing interest in style this should still be interesting though.

I’ll be discussing quite a few things. The biggest thing being how the majority of people are pretty much dressing in just three different ways.

Menswear

Vintage

Streetwear

What’s interesting to me is that how you can pretty much link a demographic to each style of wear.

For example, the hobbyist who’s really into fashion will typically be into dressing vintage (vintage including archival clothing as well.) Younger men, especially in their early twenties will be generally wearing streetwear.

What’s unique about menswear however is that even if your wardrobe consists primarily of vintage or streetwear pieces, generally speaking, you will still have to have menswear pieces in your wardrobe as well.

This isn’t the case in reverse. If you dress in menswear primarily, you don’t need vintage or streetwear pieces in your wardrobe.

This is because with certain occasions you have expected to have some degree of professionality or formality in dress. For example, with most nice restaurants you’re expected to wear a buttoned shirt and shoes that aren’t sneakers. You aren’t usually limited by a menswear-centric wardrobe if you choose to dress that way but you are limited by a vintage or streetwear heavy wardrobe.

The only time this isn’t the case is if you live on the fringes of society and don’t have to deal with any sort of professionalism, whatsoever.

For example, you will need to have clothing for interviewing even if you dress in streetwear or vintage clothing primarily.

I also feel like menswear can actually directly improve your life while that isn’t so much the case for the other aforementioned types of style.

I find that the more professionally I am dressed, the better I am treated across the board. Dressing smarter opens more doors for you both literally and figuratively.

This is also the case with dating and the opposite sex. A “dope” streetwear fit just doesn’t have the same power as a smarter fit with a blazer and nice leather shoes. I know this from experience.

It appears me to that having nice menswear pieces does more for your status than even the dopest most creative type of streetwear or vintage fit. It genuinely affects your life.

This is why I moved away from doing any, and all, sort of styling for men and focused on styling men who want to look their age. My goal is genuinely to improve men’s life, it’s not to make them look cool on social media.

Another interesting thing I want to talk about is how style is headed in the direction of being much more homogenized as opposed to having defined trends. This is because of how much of a goliath social media has become in people’s lives.

You remember how in the earlier late 2000s EVERYBODY was wearing Hollister, Aeropostale and Abercrombie & Fitch? Things like that probably have gone the wayside. The fit of clothing in the overall style zeitgeist is trending looser across the board but there aren’t any brands or types of style that are just dominating. Even the dad shoe trend existed concurrently with several other trendy types of shoes (the minimalist white sneaker being one.)

Because of social media style is becoming way more based on your own personality and preferences than anything else. A lot of old trends were a result of celebrities and marketing. Nowadays people are more influenced by their peers than influencers and celebrities.

With all of that being said. It is my opinion that you should have a menswear base in your wardrobe even if you are into streetwear or vintage clothing. It just brings so much utility unless, as I said earlier, you are indeed living on the fringes of society.

Just a few interesting thoughts that popped in my mind.

I’ll have some more information on the book I’m working on soon.

Thank you for reading.

I find that you can pretty much categorize the biggest ways money is wasted on style in 4 ways. These categories being (in no particular order):

1. Not Taking Care Of Clothing
2. Blindbuying Items
3. Not Buying Items That You Actually Want
4. Buying Things When You Have No Idea What You’re Doing

1. Not Taking Care Of Clothing

As an example, I’ve probably wasted around $400~ by not purchasing shoe trees (when I should know better.) This isn’t a HUGE number when compared to how much money I’ve spent on clothing altogether but, it still adds up. That $400 could’ve been a nice dinner.

As another example: polos and chinos are super wash sensitive and shrink easily if you don’t follow the garment care instructions. Just one improper wash cycle could shrink these garments and BOOM! you’re out $70 to $90.

I have an article on taking care of clothing you can read here.

2. Blindbuying Items

This is more popular in the fragrance community than in the men’s style community as a whole.

Blindbuying is basically buying something and taking a gamble (buying a fragrance you’ve never sampled, buying a suit when you don’t know your measurements, etc.)

If you don’t know your size in a brand or you’re not familiar with how an item will work with you you probably don’t want to spend the money on that item.

Generally, you want to do as much research as possible before buying your garments or anything styling-related.

As an example: I blind bought a fragrance from Amazon, Milestone, that had RAVING reviews. I didn’t like it AT ALL. It was a complete waste of money and I’ve decided to just mail it to a pal.

Whenever possible try before buying unless you can guarantee that you can return the item.

3. Buying Items That You Don’t Really Want

This is another big one for me. I’ve found myself buying items that I “like” as alternatives to items that I love in hopes of saving money. This almost NEVER works out.

As an example: I bought a pair of GH Bass loafers instead of just going with Meermin or Allen Edmond. They had this cheap-looking vinyl-y plastic crap all over that I had to remove with rubbing alcohol. Me saving $100 quickly turned into a completely UNFUN DIY project. If you account for labor I ended up costing myself MUCH MORE than $100.

If you are equipped financially ALWAYS pick the quality good over the cheap alternative.

EVERY single time you cheap out you will regret it.

There’s been plenty of times that I’ve bought $20 sunglasses from mall kiosks or Target and almost every single time I say to myself “Wow, I shouldn’t have spent that twenty dollars.”

There has never been a time I’ve bought RETROSUPERFUTURE, Ray-Ban, or Illesteva sunglasses and thought “Wow, I shouldn’t have spent the money on those sunglasses.”

Another thing to consider is that, if you’re anything like me, chances are you’ll just end up buying the item you wanted initially anyway.

I also address this in this article here.

4. Buying Things When You Have No Idea What You’re Doing

This is how I wasted the MOST amount of money. None of the other categories even come close. I’ve wasted nearly $20,000 throughout my style journey because of this. Do not go crazy buying items if you don’t know:

How to size yourself

What works well with your body

Very much about style

You want to make sure you have a firm grasp on style and fashion before you start taking out a second mortgage to buy clothes (not literally, don’t do this, it’s very fiscally irresponsible.)

Therein is the value of styling services. I HIGHLY implore you to consider talking to a MEN’S stylist (real ones, not clothing box services), even if not me, before going trigger happy with your purchases. It’s not fun or cheap having to replace your whole wardrobe. If you’d like for me to help you just go ahead and click here and we can chat.

Crew 484 Slim-fit Tech Pant

Truthfully the only reason I made this Free Look was to get those Ray-Ban State Street Sunglasses in front of your eyes.

It’s pretty unusual for a brand like Ray-Ban to introduce such an interesting silhouette. Wearing something like these will DEFINITELY make you (in a good way.)

I find the black/transparent color way is a lot less loud than the other color ways while still being interesting.

This is more of a look geared to the younger crowd (as in men in the early thirties or younger) but if you live in somewhere a little more metropolitan you can pull something like this off even if you’re older, EASY.

The ring by Bleue Burnham compliments the sunglasses’ proportions nicely with it’s clunky, but still rounded, silhouette.

The “Lemon Chrome” (mustard yellow) Converse Chucks brings a bit of color pop to the outfit and stops it from being too monotonous. While red is the complimentary color of blue, I felt like yellow really brought the whole look to life.

The grey cotton shawl cardigan by Ralph Lauren not only adds a bit of texture but also adds a bit of layering. It’s a really easy cardigan to wear, even for men afraid of cardigans. Men are REALLY bad about incorporating layering for aesthetics and not just pure functionality.

I went with the Bedford Coal instead of Black for the pants because… black is too easy. And boring. The Bedford Coal colorway also works with the grey cardi better than black does.

Hope you enjoyed this article and learned a thing or two!

It’s been awhile since I’ve done a Free Look! For those unfamiliar these are outfits I curate for you to either use as inspiration or just straight up steal to wear. I also briefly explain the styling.

This is a super summery look that would be great for relaxing (whether it’s the beach, a boat, the backyard, etc. )

I included Birkenstocks because they’re great sandals that don’t get enough love (in fact, sandals in general don’t really get enough love.)

The watch included is a diver watch from Orient (Orient sells GREAT watches for what you pay for them.) Said watch is water resistant to 200 meters so you can even wear it in the pool (just not scuba diving.) The blue dial combined with the orange detail on the bezel pairs VERY nicely with the Persol sunglasses without looking contrived.

Speaking of the Persol sunglasses: these are a iconic silhouette famously donned by Steve McQueen (thus being nicknamed Steve McQueen sunglasses.) They’re also foldable. Persol is one among many of sunglasses manufacturers for those looking to set themselves a part from the horde of people wearing Ray-Ban wayfarers.

The shirt included is a linen shirt meant to be worn a little looser (as the product page instructs, if you buy this size up) lending to the chillaxing nature of this outfit. Linen is also one of the best fabrics for breathability, I would call it the quintessential summer fabric.

Jewelry, especially necklaces, aren’t for everybody but with how beachy this Isabel Marant necklace was I just had to include it. It’s a little pricey for what you get but any seashell or equally beachy necklace would work just as well for this look.

Navy would’ve been the most obvious choice for the shorts, but the most obvious choice isn’t always the best choice. By using a green pair of shorts we create a split complimentary color scheme that bring out the orange details on both the watch and sunglasses.

Thank you for reading!

In this article I’m basically going to show you pretty much all of the hygiene + grooming products that I use.

Sensodyne Toothpaste

If you get canker sores this is a really nice. I’ve tried a few other brands (including Opalescence) but they all eventually give me canker sores because of sodium lauryl sulfate. While it is a “whitening” toothpaste I don’t really notice any sort of whitening. I more so use it because of how gentle it is while still being effective at cleaning.

CeraVe Foaming Cleanser

I just switched from the regular CeraVe hydrating cleanser (green label) to this one. Skin care is super important and you should AT LEAST clean with your face (not with soap because it’ll mess with your skin’s Ph balance and may be too harsh for it), moisturize it and use SPF. I find this to clean a little better than the regular hydrating cleanser.

CeraVe Ultra Light Moisturizer Lotion + SPF

Another recent switch from me. I used to use the normal AM moisturizer lotion with SPF but I found it would break me out (I don’t break out uncompletely but I get two or three pimples.) Neither leave a white cast on skin when fully applied but I find this goes on a lot easier and, most importantly, doesn’t break me out.

Dentek Floss Picks

I use these instead of actual floss. I thought about getting a water floss but this works well enough for me.

Toothbrush

I literally just use some Oragel toothbrush I got from the dentist’s office. The electric ones are alright but truthfully I don’t notice a difference in cleanliness.

Luelli Teeth Whitening System + LED

This is great if you need to whiten your teeth. Very effective and easy on the gums. I’m not quite sure if the LED actually helps with whitening but I figured since it’s only a few dollars more I’d get the kit with the LED.

The instructions say to put the gel on the mouth guard and apply it that way but I get much better results (and find it easier to avoid getting it on my gums) by putting it directly on my teeth by using a Q-Tip/cotton swab.

This is way better than any pretty much anything you can buy in your typical pharmacy, including the expensive whitening strips (I’ve tried them.) The only thing more effective would be a whitening system with a higher carbamide peroxide percentage gel (this one is 35% but some go as high as 44$) or Zoom whitening at a dentist’s office.

Deodorant

As long as it isn’t too fragrant it doesn’t really matter what you use unless you have sensitive skin. In the video companion for this article I use Secret but I’ve since upgrading to Dove for sensitive skin.

Mouthwash

I’m not sure if this actually helps with oral hygiene but I find it helps my breath somewhat (though since getting my teeth professionally cleaned I don’t really have too many breath issues) and makes my mouth feel cleaner (again not sure if it actually helps with oral hygiene but it does make my mouth feel cleaner.) I just use generic instead of Listerine.

I also floss after every meal and try to brush my teeth twice a day (I brush my teeth every morning but sometimes I’m so busy into the evening the second brushing session slips through the cracks.)

Evagloss Bumps Solution

This helps prevent razor bumps… a little. I get them often enough where every little bit matters though. This is a must have for me but I find that my razor, blades and shave routine matters waaaaaaaaay more. However If you don’t get razor bumps you probably don’t need this.

WEISHI Safety Razor

I use this cheapo from Amazon. Not very aggressive and easy to learn with. Mind you I use a safety razor because it prevents me from getting razor bumps. I have no interest, whatsoever, in the whole wet shaving hobby. Do not use this to shave your genitals. If you shave your genitals use a cartridge razor.

Cremo Shave Cream

This is the shaving cream I use with my safety razor. Like I said, I have no interest in the whole wet shaving hobby so I use this tubed goop instead of spending a ton of time using shaving soap and a lather.

I find this works a little better than Barbasol (which I find works better than the commonly recommended Aveeno for sensitive skin shaving gel.) I linked to a different scent than the one I’m currently using because I’ll be switching to that one once this tube is over.

Feather Razor Blades

I find a really sharp shave with proper technique actually prevents me from getting razor bumps. If you use these guys be careful because it is incredibly easy to nick yourself if you don’t know what you’re doing. The Gillette 7 O’clock razors are a bit more affordable and less sharp but still work really well.

Ketoconazole Shampoo

I use Regenepure Dr which is pretty pricey for shampoo but I use it prevent male pattern baldness. It has an ingredient in it called ketoconazole that helps with that wonderful ordeal. It also helps with dandruff (not the reason I bought it.) Unfortunately it is no longer available on Amazon.

Nizoral is another alternative for a ketoconazole shampoo I’ve heard good things about but I have no personal experience with it.

Wahl Grooming Kit

I cut my own hair so this is a must for me. If you’re not brave enough to do the same it’s not really necessary to get a full kit but even if you don’t cut your own hair clippers are fantastic for pubic grooming.

Wahl Trimmer

This, however, I would recommend to every man. Keeping your nose and ear clear of hairs makes a huge difference in your physical appearance (and amount of boogers.) You can also use this to clean up your eyebrows.

Isopropyl Alcohol/Witch Hazel

I use these guys post shave. I only apply isopropyl alcohol on the nicks and I use witch hazel instead of traditional aftershave. I also use the witch hazel as a facial toner occasionally (which is why I use Thayers instead of generic though going generic on the isopropyl alcohol is fine.) I use the following to apply these to my skin:

Organic Cotton Rounds

These are incredibly gentle on the skin. They’re also great for applying a real hyaluronic acid toner as part of a skincare routine. I will NEVER go back to cotton balls.

Clothes Steamer

Will change your life. Setting up an iron board and using an iron is such a pain in the ass but with this guy all you have to do is fill it with water and plug it in. Most effective when used from inside of a garment. Another cool thing is you can use this on delicates and suiting (just be careful because you can still melt the canvas and cause bubbling.)

The one linked is not the one I use but should work about as well.

Nail Clippers

Super important. Disgusting nails are not only gross and unhygienic, they’re also extremely unattractive. I get my toes too because gross ass toe nails are probably even WORSE than gross ass fingernails. Don’t go all the way to the nail bed, instead, when you do clip your nails (I usually do it once a week), get rid of the excess white/transcluent area that dirt accumulates under. Brand doesn’t really matter but I find using anything but a full size is a pain in the ass.

Unfortunately I am probably forgetting a few nonessential items but these are all of the hygiene + grooming products that I use that actually make a notable difference.

This isn’t going to be one of those “dress like this to get girls” articles. This is my personal insight, through experience, of the role of style in sexually attracting women with some practical advice sprinkled in.

Does Your Style Matter In Sexually Attracting Women

Yes your style does matter, but your hygiene and grooming matter more than your clothes (hygiene and grooming IS a part of your style.) If you care about sexually attracting women your hygiene and grooming should be as close to perfect as possible.

You can check out my list of The 17 Essential Items if your hygiene and grooming aren’t already maximized.

Also, style and physical appearance is not the end all be all for being to sexually attractive to women. It just helps. Things like outcome independence and confidence (as often as it’s said, it’s true) affect how sexually attractive you are. Hell, even things like logistics can affect your sex life more than how attractive you are.

That being said, if you care about your sex life at all you should care about your style.

The goal isn’t to dress so well that women become sexually attracted to you.

The goal is to dress well enough that women aren’t turned off by you.

That being said certain colognes and styles can be a turn-on to women.

One night while partying in Louisiana I had on Pure Havane by Thierry Mugler. A girl hugged me and loved the scent so much she started kissing my neck all over (funny enough, exactly where I sprayed it even though obviously you can’t taste cologne.)

How Should You Dress To Sexually Attract Women

In my personal experience the only things that actually make a difference are:

Having nice leather shoes that aren’t sneakers

Having a nice watch

Having unique but stylish outerwear

Wearing other accessories than a watch (rings, necklaces, etc.)

Having an amazing fragrance

When I say nice I mean high quality and non-cheap looking, not luxury. So for example that would mean brands like Meermin, Beckett Simonon, Allen Edmond (if you don’t mind the absolutely terrible quality control) for shoes and brands like Seiko, Movado, Orient, Tissot, and Nomos for watches. Don’t waste your money on luxury crap if you think it’ll help you “get girls.” You’ll just look like you’re overcompensating and/or a meal ticket.

That being said don’t be afraid to buy luxury items if you actually like them, just don’t buy them expecting a one way ticket to “poon-paradise.”

Instead, that money is better spent on a sports car!

..That’s a joke by the way. During the most sexually active period of my life I actually had no car.

Jokes aside you, at minimum, want to look like a man who has his shit together. Having high-quality shoes and a high-quality watch is extremely effective at accomplishing this (even if you don’t actually have your shit together.)

That being said I mentioned outerwear earlier, and I have no idea why it makes such a difference compared to other garments. My experience is that, except for shoes and accessories, it is more way important than any other garment by at least an entire magnitude.

Good options:

A nice leather jacket (real lambskin leather not genuine “leather”) from somewhere like Schotts (or Allsaints if you’re on a budget)

A well-fitting casual blazer (not a suit jacket, an actual sports jacket/blazer)

Nicer puffers/parkas

On Other Accessories

The main point of wearing other accessories isn’t so much that they make you more sexually attractive. It is because they invite conversation and physical touch.

The One Thing Style Influencers Will Never Tell You

If you’re to a bar or club tees from certain brands perform outrageously well. It has nothing to do with price. Some of the brands that perform extremely well include:

Tommy Hilfiger

Calvin Klein

Guess

I don’t know exactly why these brands outperform other brands in the same type of market segment like Armani and even most luxury brands but I have a theory.

My theory is as follows: Women really like these brands (especially Calvin Klein. It seems like every girl I know has or wants that grey Calvin Klein sports bra and underwear set.) The reason luxury brands like Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, and Louis Vuitton don’t perform as well as the ladder brands, even though women love them as well, is because wearing them makes it look like you’re overcompensating.

I’m not saying you should go out and buy a t-shirt from one of those brands if you’re trying to improve your sex life. I’m saying that if you like any of those brands, instead of following the dogmatic belief that branding is the devil itself and that you should NEVER wear branded clothing, you should maybe consider a tastefully branded t-shirt from one of these brands into your wardrobe.

What is tasteful branding you may ask? It’s hard to exactly quantify “tasteful branding” but if I had it it would be:

When the garment would be the exact same as an unbranded garment except for ONE small visual asset.

I’m also not saying that you should NEVER wear obnoxiously branded clothing. It’s just A LOT harder to style clothing like that unless you know what you’re doing.

Some Strange Oddities I Can’t Explain

These are some weird things I notice that I can’t really explain:

When alone in private I’ve found some women are super into actual pajamas and robes.

I’ve also found that even though smarter outfits work best on one-on-one dates, super casual (t-shirts, etc.) work best when clubbing or going to the bar.

This is beyond the scope of this article but:

A lot of guys think how fit you are is extremely important to how attractive you are.

It does matter, but all things being equal, unless you are EXTREMELY overweight, the out of shape version of you with better style is going to beat the fit version of you with worst style EVERY TIME.

I’ve been literally shredded. I’ve been fit. I’ve been fat. I’ve been VERY fat. I’m speaking on this from experience.

That being said, the fit version of you, given equal style, WILL beat out the out of shape version of you.

The difference is negligible however.

The biggest thing losing weight does for your appearance (beyond making your body less androgynous) is make your face look better and even that’s only to a certain point.

You should still try and stay in shape though, if not your physical appearance then for your health.

Thank you for reading.

When it comes to your wardrobe there are three things you shouldn’t cheap out on:

Shoes

Accessories

Outerwear

Why? Because you typically get what you pay for, they’re the first things people notice on you, and they last a lot longer than other pieces.

I’m not saying you should spend exorbitant amounts of money on these things, just that you shouldn’t cheap out on them. As a rule of thumb I spend just a little more than I’m comfortable with on these pieces.

Shoes

This applies more so to leather shoes than canvas shoes (although the construction of an ASOS plimsoll is going to markedly worse than something like Converse for example.)

This also applies more to actual shoes than sneakers (the lay person isn’t going to notice a huge perceivable difference between Adidas Stan Smiths and something from Greats for example.)

Until you reach a certain price-point with leather shoes you get plastic covered crap that looks cheap.

When leather like this creases the wrinkles look terrible. It just looks worse over times no matter how much you take care of them. Good leather develops a patina over time and the creases don’t look nearly as bad.

The soles are also glued on instead of stitched. When the soles blow out they’re done for. You can resole welted shoes. You’re basically spending the same for less for better looking shoes over time.

Entry level brand suggestions: Thursday Boots, Meermin, and Beckett Simonon. NOT ALLEN EDMONDS (because of quality control issues)

If you ABSOLUTELY cannot afford any of those: Florsheim, and JCPenney Stafford Line

These will NOT be nearly as good as the above brands but you at least kind of get what you pay for.

Accessories

By accessories I primarily mean sunglasses, watches and jewelry.

This is especially important with jewelry because cheap jewelry can literally leave marks on your skin.

Jewelry

With jewelry you want to avoid weird zinc alloys. Stick to stainless steel, glass, stone, fabric and precious metals only.

ASOS and Etsy are great places for jewelry if you’re hurting for money. I’ve found that HM is a little sketchy when it comes to finding jewelry that doesn’t irritate your skin.

Sunglasses

Once you reach a certain price-point Sunglasses look markedly more luxurious because of things like better acetate (carved and hand polished vs injection molded), metal, and lenses.

Luxxotica brands do suck compared compared to brands that specialize in eyewear but they’re not as bad as people think. Don’t be afraid to get sunglasses from Luxxotica brands.

Entry level brand suggestions: Warby Parker, Kent Wang, Ray Ban, Persol, Illesteva, and RETROSUPERFUTURE

If you’re really hurting for money: Some $15 to $20 Sunglasses are fine, just avoid the drug store/dollar store/mall crap. Target Goodfellows is my personal favorite brand for absolute beater sunglasses.

Watches

Don’t waste your money on Daniel Wellington and MVMT watches. They’re terrible, ugly, cheap garbage.

Also, don’t feel obligated to go mechanical unless you’re into watches no matter what anybody says. Mechanical watches don’t keep time as well and setting the time can be a pain in the ass. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with having a watch with a quartz movement (especially if you need the time on your watch to be precise.)

Entry Level Brands: Tissot, Timex, Seiko, Casio, Invicta (NEVER at full retail, and only their homages/replicas, not their ugly original crap), Citizen, and Orient

*Wallets

Not nearly as important as the other three but I highly recommend getting a nicer wallet. People DO notice and you do feel better pulling it out.

I have an Anson Calder wallet and it was a bit pricey but it definitely was worth the purchase. You don’t have to spend nearly that much however.

Some good less expensive options include: Bellroy, Craft & Lore, Mamut, Das Offene, and Taylor Stitch

Outerwear

This applies MOST to leather outerwear. Even more so than leather shoes. You DO NOT want to cheap out on leather outerwear.

That doesn’t mean it doesn’t apply to synthetic, cotton, and wool outerwear as well.

Outerwear takes up the most real estate in your outfit so you want to make sure your outerwear looks great.

Entry level brand suggestions: Alpha Industries, Carhartt/Carhartt WIP, Schott, Barbour, L. L. Bean, Patagonia, and Allsaints (on sale ONLY)

If you’re really hurting for money: Uniqlo, Abercrombie & Fitch (yes, Abercrombie & Fitch. They’re not nearly as bad now as they were before with the branding)

Thank you for reading.

So this article mostly applies to people who live in places that get rougher winters. When I’m talking about a rough winter, I’m talking about place where it’s not too unusual to see single degree Fahrenheit temperatures or negative degree Celsius temperatures during Winter.

The main takeaway from this article is that you don’t have to sacrifice too much in the form of style to get function out of your garments.

Personally, I err to the side of function rather than style, and that’s typically how I style my clients as well.

Winter is actually my favorite season style-wise because I get to play with layers (eventually I plan to also make an article on layering.) Also, like I said, balancing that thin line between function and style makes things interesting as well.

A lot of people have difficulty doing that, so if you can do it yourself it really elevates your outfit.

So these are the essentials, these are things you’re going to want to have:

A Real Winter Coat

Gloves

Snow Boots/Overshoes

Base Layer Pants

Sunglasses (Yes, Sunglasses)

These are things you may want to consider (if you plan on spending quite a bit of time in the cold):

A hat

A scarf

Thick wool socks

A Real Winter Coat

So in terms of a real winter coat, you can’t go wrong with a down parka.

When I say down I don’t just mean feather down I mean synthetic down as well.

Why a down parka?

They look great

They keep you warmer than just about anything else (especially because of the fur trim)

Puffer jackets, pea coats, and top coats are fine as well if you don’t mind having to wear a hat sometimes when the temperature is especially brutal.

One thing about pea coats and top coats: If you don’t size them properly, if they don’t fit your body, or if the rest of your style isn’t on point, you might risk the chance of looking like a dork wearing one.

You only want to go with pea coats and top coats made out of wool:

It looks so much better than synthetic crap and

It’ll keep you so much warmer. Polyester isn’t going to keep you warm

Another thing: If you think because you wear suits or blazers a lot that you need to go with a pea coat or a top coat, you don’t.

You can wear a puffer or parka over a blazer or suit as long as it’s not too crazy. Some traditionalists might disagree with me, but hey, they can eat it. I disagree with that sentiment. I disagree with a lot of things traditionalist think.

I think wearing other types of outerwear except the aforementioned when the temperature is especially brutal is kind of silly.

A lot of jackets and outerwear don’t cover your thighs and legs and that actually makes a pretty noticeable difference in the cold.

In terms of recommendations, I’m a huge fan of Alpha Industries and I’ll shill that brand until the day I die.

Uniqlo isn’t a bad option either if you’re on a budget,

A lot of people either buy or recommend Canada Goose, but it’s not a very economical option. While Canada Goose does have natural goose down in their parkas, you’ll find that the North Face and Eddie Bauer both have natural down as well at a fraction of the price.

I guess the real selling point of Canada Goose would be the actual fox for trim. While it does look a little nicer than synthetic trim and keeps your face a little warmer than synthetic trim, in my opinion, it’s not really worth the extra hundreds of dollars.

Another thing is: everybody and their mom (almost literally) in metropolitan areas wears Canada Goose. So it’s just pretty, for lack of a better word, basic to me.

If I wanted to spend four digits on a single article of clothing I would just go all the way and instead of getting a Canada Goose parka, I would get something from perhaps Gorski or another high end clothier instead.

Like this one right here.

You can do better than Canada Goose. You might even want to consider a brand like Moose Knuckles.

Gloves

Gloves are so incredibly important. Your extremities get cold way faster than the rest of your body in frigid weather.

Cool thing: Maybe you’re already hip to this. I wasn’t so hip to this and I found this out recently, but now even actual leather gloves (made out of real leather, not the bonded crap or pleather) are touchscreen compatible. So that’s pretty cool. Especially if you need to call a Lyft or an Uber or something.

Moving back to extremities getting cold way faster than the rest of your body: I’m particularly sensitive to this.

If my hands aren’t properly insulated and I’m in the cold for too long my body could be sweating while my hands would be an incredible amounts of pain from the cold.

An example of why protecting your extremities is so important: One day when it was especially bad outside, around -10 degrees Fahrenheit, I was walking home from the bar and despite having gloves on and another layer of gloves underneath, I still almost got frostbite. You can only imagine what could’ve happen if I didn’t have gloves on.

Snow Boots And Overshoes

There are a few problems with wearing typical leather shoes or boots in inclement weather.

I’ll start with the biggest one: moisture and salt absolutely tear through calfskin leather.

It’s crazy, they demolish it.

Some people will wear a Cordovan leather in the winter and just be really good about wiping the salt off but I personally wouldn’t recommend doing that either.

Another this is: even with rubber soles you’re not going to get the same traction on snow and ice as you would have with overshoes or snow boots.

If your shoes have leather soles you can forget about having any form of traction whatsoever.

In terms of the choice between snow boots and overshoes, I prefer snow boots. While overshoes will protect your shoes from the elements, they provide no warmth whatsoever.

Another reason I prefer snow boots is dealing with over shoes just creates more hassle and complexity.

I try to be super simple with my wardrobe. I wear loafers and slip on sneakers on purpose just because I don’t feel like tying my shoes.

I’m not saying you have to do that as well but that’s how I am personally. I’m not a fan of unnecessary hassle and complexity.

Snow boots don’t have look ugly either. While L. L. Bean is known for their duck boots Sorel makes them as well and they definitely have way better looking colorways than L. L. Bean does.

If you think these are ugly you have objectively poor taste.

Base Layer Pants

Not much to say here. Absolute game changer.

I don’t really notice a difference in how cold I am with a base layer top on, but there’s a huge difference when I have base layer pants on.

Sunglasses

Sunglasses are actually more important in winter than they are in summer. This is because snow is super reflective and reflects a ton of UV light. This reflected UV light can give you a eye condition called photokeratitis, which is pretty much an sunburn of your eye.

I don’t know about you but I don’t really want to have a sunburn on my eye.

The one thing you need to make sure of is that your sunglasses actually provide UV protection.

If you’re wearing, for the sake of example, fake Ray-Bans, sometimes the lenses don’t actually provide UV protection.

Things You May Want to Consider If You Plan on Spending Quite a Bit of Time in the Cold

A Hat

I’m going hatless this winter since the faux fur trim on my parka does a good enough job of keeping my head warm DURING the limited amounts of time I’ll be spending in frigid weather. I’m also growing my hair out.

If you don’t have some sort of trim on your outerwear, you have short hair, or you plan on spending extended periods of time in the cold, a knit hat might not be a bad idea.

A Scarf

Another case of my parka basically taking care of everything. Again if your outerwear doesn’t conceal your neck properly or you plan on spending extended periods of time in the cold this may not a be a bad idea.

Bonus: You can also wrap your scarf around your mouth as a makeshift baclava

Thick Wool Socks

Destroy cotton socks when it comes to keeping your feet warm. You can double them up when it’s extra cold outside.

Mind you, when I say wool socks I mean the kind that look like normal crew socks not dress socks.

Bonus Pro Tip

This may seem obvious enough but you can upturn your collars for extra wind protection.

Not much use on a parka but awesome for top coats and pea coats.

Not gonna lie I feel pretty big brain and sophisticated when people see me turn my cardigan collar up when I go outside in the cold and then turn it back down when I go inside.

Thank you for reading.

It’s pretty important to take care of your clothes. The biggest reason being saving money in the long term but another reason is presentation.

If you take care of your clothes they’re going to remain looking great over time.

If you’ve ever gone to the Salvation Army or Goodwill you may notice that the clothes are kind of dull/dingy looking.

Usually this is because the people who bought the garments before donating them didn’t properly take care of them.

My garments usually last between 2 and 4 years. This wasn’t always the case. I only started to get this much wear out of my garments after taking garment care seriously.

I’m actually pretty anal about laundering my clothes now and chances are once you buy a new garment, take care of it properly, and notice the difference, you will be as well.

I’m not saying that my clothes look perfect but instead of looking dull and dingy over time they age well and develop character.

Learn To Read The Garment Care Label

The most important thing is being able to interpret the garment care label on your clothing.

You can use this diagram to find out what the garment care symbols on your clothing labels mean:

You’re also usually safe just washing your clothes on cold in a gentle cycle.

This isn’t always the case however. Some garments (almost all sports jackets for example) are dry clean only so tread carefully.

General Tips

You also should only wash clothes when they’re starting to get dirty. Never wash them just to wash them.

The most typical damage sources to clothing are the washer and dryer, in that order.

You also want to use color guard detergent like Woolite, Perwoll, Cheer or The Laundress Darks

You also may want to use a little less detergent than you usally do. Going all the way to the fill line on the cap is NOT necessary.

I personally never wash my nicer clothes on anything but cold and gentle. I do, however, use hot water on my work out clothes, underwear, socks and other laundry prone to soiling.

You’re also going to want to pretreat stains with something like Oxi-Clean and wash stained clothing as soon as it’s stained.

Before you throw clothing that was stained in the dryer make sure that the wash got rid of the stain. If you don’t you will SET THE STAIN. Losing garments this way is NOT fun.

I personally don’t even use the dryer unless I absolutely have to and when I do I use the lowest setting.

You also want to make sure you’re washing garments alone for the time or with like colors so any leftover dye doesn’t bleed on your other clothing.

The difference in laundering your clothes correctly is so substantial you may literally want to hurt people who don’t launder them correctly.

One. single. incorrect wash can ruin a garment. For example: I’ve found that single dryer cycle on some raw denims can completely ruin the finishing.

Baseball Caps

You always want to hand wash baseball caps.

Fill a container with warm water and a bit of detergent (around a tablespoon but you don’t have to be exact.)

Put your hat in the container and go at the visible dirty parts with a soft sponge or rag.

Let the hat soak in the container for 30 minutes.

Fill it with newspaper, an old shirt (or anything similar really) to keep it’s shape then set it over a towel to dry

For wool baseball caps make sure you use a cleaning product that’s made for wool instead of detergent.

Jewelry (Watches/Rings/Sunglasses)

Mix warm water and dish soap (I personally have never had to use soap on any of my jewelry but this appears to be the general consensus after about 2 hours of research) and use a soft bristle tooth brush to clean.

If you’re a cleaning a watch that’s not WR100M or more DO NOT hold it the under faucet or submerge it in water.

If you don’t know how water resistance your watch is DON’T hold it under water or submerge it.

For sunglasses I always just use lens cleaner from Amazon/Sunglass Hut/Target etc., everything else seems to fog the lenses.

Inexpensive Sneakers (Converses, AF1s etc.)

Remove laces, insoles and put them in a mesh laundry bag

Wash the unlaced shoes in cold water on a delicate cycle

This only applies to cotton, synthetic and leather sneakers. If you wash suede shoes like this you WILL ruin them.

You can also wash the lashes separately in a hot cycle (you can also just buy new laces)

I don’t do all of that restoring crap like using Angelus paint. A little damage adds character

Non-Sneaker Leather Shoes

Use a leather cleanser when they’re visible dirty and condition monthly. Any other time you need to clean them just use a lightly damped rag

Polish them when they’re looking dull

Use a shoe tree to minimize creasing and order. Shoe trees also make your shoes last longer by absorbing moisture from the shoe’s leather

I forgot to mention this on the video but make sure you wipe salt off of your shoes (ESPECIALLY leather shoes) as soon as you can. Salt tears through leather like nobody’s business.

Thank you for reading.
